Merit Badge Counselor

Any adult can be a merit badge counselor. In fact, we need your help teaching boys a skill that you are familiar with. There are over 100 different badges and if you would like to teach one, we’ll schedule it (please contact Christell at committeechair @ troop313.net).

Before the classes can begin though, the following steps must be completed.

  1. Youth Protection: If you haven’t taken youth protection, visit https://my.scouting.org and register for an account (if you don’t already have one). Then take the youth protection course. Once that is complete, print out a copy of the certificate. This is valid for two years, but the Inland Northwest Council requires that it is updated annually.
  2. BSA Adult Application: If you are not a registered adult, complete the application with “Merit Badge Counselor; #42” as the position code. NOTE: Please complete page 3 of this application and the last page.
  3. Merit Badge Application: Complete the merit badge application with details on the badges you wish to teach.

All three of these need to be returned to the Scout office. Processing can take up to four weeks. Once you’ve been approved, you’ll receive a letter in the mail signifying you can teach the badges.

It is recommended that you make a copy of this information for yourself and the troop (please give to Christell) in case it is lost at the council level.
